Steuben County 4-H Youth Building County Fair Awards and Activities.
The 4-H youth building at the Steuben County Fair had many great exhibits from a wide range of the project areas including horticulture, including vegetables, flowers and plants; foods and food preservation; clothing; home environment; fine arts and crafts; photography; woodworking; small and large shop projects; electrical and environmental projects.
The 4-H members that were chosen for the top awards in the 4-H Youth Building for the 2011 Steuben County Fair were:
Best of Show: Clothing: Alex Uhl, Willing Workers. Foods: Jill DeWispelaere, Independent- Italian tomato rolls; Lucas Gilson, Willing Workers –carrot cookie bites; cranberry cheese loaf bread, Austrian nut cookies, whole grain bread, Lindsey Draper, Independent-healthy snack poster, Raven Foote, Willing Workers-oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookie, Bethany Draper, Independent-wheat free chocolate cookies, Jonathan Gritzmacher, 4 Clovers-pesto swirl bread, Megan Rosko, Outsiders- Heritage recipe collection. Home Environment: Kylie Harvey, Country Bunch – Quilt and quilted pin cushion; Art Objects: Luke Gilson, Willing Workers-Graphic Print, Jessica Whitehead, Howard Hillbillies-solar light, Keliena Weatherwax, Howard Hillbillies-ceramics; Photography:Jenna Brokaw, Loon Lake Raiders- My Life Tree; Electrical: Ryan Barber, Southern Tier Livestock-lamp; Nathan Lawson, Country Bunch-lamp; Ornamental Horticulture: Nicole Schmaldinst, Southern Tier Livestock- pressed flower plaque.
Teen Evaluators/Judges Helpers who worked with the judges and helped arrange the exhibits on Monday were Gabriel Barone, Megan Cratsley, Bethany Draper, Lindsay Draper, Raven Foote, Jonathan Gritzmacher, Samantha Towner and Arielle Wilcox.
Teen Assistants who helped in the building throughout the week were: Ashlynn Bennett, Bethany Draper, Lindsey Draper, Raven Foote, Katie Matthews, Samantha Towner, Arielle Wilcox.
For Fair Youth Days, there were on-going activities in the 4-H youth building. Amber Tietje, the 4-H Summer Assistant, held a duck show training week-old ducklings to go up a ramp and slide down into the pool. Samantha Towner and Alyx Uhl gave their District Public Presentations. New project areas for the 2012 year showcased in interactive sessions were: Robotics in action and making solar smoothies where solar power provided the electric to run the blender.
Contests held during the week included: Veggie Art Contest. Each contestant planned a sculpture made from locally grown vegetables and had 20 minutes to assemble it for the judges. The results were displayed for all to view. Ashlynn Bennett, Benjamin Bouton, Sean Brizee, Kylie Harvey, Nathan Lawson, Isabella Painter, Connor Sykora and Jessica Yeoman’s creations were chosen for state fair. Cake Decorating Contest: Each brought a basic frosted cake or giant cookie and decorated it in a 20 minute time frame. The results were judged. The winners of the “Most Creative Cake”, sponsored by the Gritzmacher Family were: Cloverbud, Haley Vosburg; Junior Member, Marie Palmer; and Senior Member, Jessica whitehead. Creative Place Setting Contest: Each participant chooses a theme and menu then brought a table setting that reflected this. The themes varied from John Deere to tea parties. Chosen for State Fair: Rachel Eckler. Flower Arranging Contest: Each person arranged a centerpiece using an assortment of flowers. Tom Cortwright gave tips for arranging as he judged the arrangements. Everyone was a winner for all were able to take their arrangements home to enjoy. |
