Four Steuben County 4-H Members Represent New York State and Steuben County at National 4-H Contests

National 4-H Dairy Contests

Matt Dobell, Dairy Characters 4-H Club, was a member of the New York State Dairy Judging Team that competed in the National Dairy Judging Contest at the Pennsylvania All – American Invitational Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in Harrisburg, PA on September 19. Matt placed 14th in the “A” Division at the New York State Fair 4-H Dairy Judging Contest which qualified him to participate in the national contest.

Matt has competed his 8th year in the Steuben County 4-H Program. He has been involved in the 4-H Dairy Program. Matt, the son of Lavern and Peggy Warriner, is a Junior at Andover Central School. He has been active in dairy judging, dairy quiz bowl, has exhibited his cattle at the New York State Fair and various other shows and participated at the 2004 New York State Fair Livestock Skillathon Contest. Matt is also active in the Allegany-Steuben Jr. Holstein Club.

At the All American Invitational Dairy Cattle Judging Contest the New York State Team placed 7th out of 15 teams overall and ranked 4th in Guernsey’s, 2nd in Jersey’s and 4th in Linear Evaluation.

National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Madison, Wisconsin

Whitney Dennis, Dairy Characters 4-H Club, was a member of the New York state Dairy Judging Team that competed in the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in Madison, Wisconsin in October. The New York State team placed 1st overall in reasons. The team placed 4th Overall out of 28 other teams.

Whitney placed 1st in the “A” Division at the New York State Fair 4-H Dairy Judging Contest which qualified her to participate in the national contest. Whitney has competed her tenth year in the Steuben County 4-H Program. She has completed extensive dairy projects as well as goat, rabbit and public presentations. Whitney, the daughter of Lorri and Rick Dennis, is a freshman at Alfred State College. She has been active in dairy judging and dairy quiz bowl and has exhibited her cattle at the New York State Fair and various other shows.

Whitney is also active in the Allegany-Steuben Jr. Holstein Club. In 2002, she was a participant of the New York State 4-H Dairy Judging Team that competed at the Pennsylvania All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, in 2003 she was a member of the New York State Dairy Quiz Bowl Team that competed in Louisville, KY and in 2004 she was a member of the New York State 4-H Livestock Skillathon Team that competed in the National Livestock Skillathon Contest in Louisville, Kentucky.

National 4-H Horse Contests

The Horse Communications and Hippology Contests were held in Louisville, Kentucky during the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in November. There were a total of 334 4-H youth from 27 different states that participated in the Eastern Nationals 4-H Horse Roundup. Katherine Pruyn, Loon Lakes Raiders 4-H Club, placed 11th in the Individual Horse Communications Event. Congratulations Katherine for representing Steuben County and New York State

Katherine participated in the New York State Horse Communications Contest held at Cornell University on May 7 and placed 1st out of 31 participants with her presentation, “The American Saddlebred” which qualified her to participate in the national contest.

Katherine, the daughter of Gary and Elaine Pruyn, is a 2nd semester sophomore at Niagara University where she is majoring in Pre-Law Political Science. She has completed her 8th and final year as a Steuben County 4-H member. Katherine has been active in the Steuben County Horse Program. She has participated in the New York State Horse Communications Contest for the past 6 years and the New York State Fair 4-H Horse Show driving division for the past 7 years. She has also participated in the Regional Hippology Contest.

Vicki Bolton was the NYS Hippology Coach. The primary objective of the Hippology contest is to provide an opportunity for youth enrolled in 4-H horse projects to demonstrate the breadth of their knowledge and their reasoning ability in subject matter related to equine science and management in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. The New York State Hippology Team placed 1st overall. It was also the 1st team in the Written Phase and the Stations Phase. The New York State Tea was 2nd in the Team Problems. National 4-H Livestock Contests Results

In November, Sean Schubmehl of the Southern Tier Livestock 4-H Club, a member of the New York State 4-H Livestock Skillathon team, and Bryan Wilson, New York State 4-H Livestock Judging coach, traveled to Louisville, Kentucky for the National Livestock Contests.

The National 4-H Livestock Skillathon competition was held on November 14th. This is the fourth year that New York State has participated in this contest and it is only the sixth National Contest. There were 19 teams. Congratulations to Sean for representing Steuben County and New York State on the New York State Skillathon Team

Sean placed 3rd in the Senior Division of the 4-H Livestock Skillathon Contest at the New York State Fair which qualified him to participate in the national contest. Sean has competed his seventh year in the Steuben County 4-H Program and he is also a member of the Willing Workers 4-H Club. He has completed numerous swine, sheep, beef, goat, food and nutrition, sewing, vegetable gardening, flower gardening, public presentations and community service projects.

Sean, the son of John and Linda Schubmehl, is a sophomore at Wayland-Cohocton Central School. Sean is active in the Livestock Judging and Livestock Skillathon program. He has exhibited swine at the New York State Fair, and various other 4-H projects have been exhibited in the youth building. Sean was also a participant in the 2004 New York State Fair Clothing Revue Program.

The National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest was held on November 15th. Thank you to Bryan Wilson for coaching the New York State 4-H Livestock Judging Team. There were 33 states participating in this contest.

Region II Hippology Contest Held

The Region II Hippology Contest was held on March 19, 2005, at Penn Yan Middle School, Penn Yan. The purpose of this contest is to provide 4-H youth with the opportunity to demonstrate the breadth of their knowledge and reasoning ability in subject matter related to equine science and management. One hundred and three 4-H members from Cayuga, Livingston, Ontario, Monroe, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates counties participated in this event.

Placing in the Top 20 from Steuben County in the Novice Individual Contest were Jenna Brokaw, Loon Lake Raiders (4th); Lauren Powell, J-T Rough Riders (6th); Jessica Pipe, Loon Lake Raiders (8th); Courtney Lewis, Loon Lake Raiders (9th); Emily Anger, Loon Lake Raiders (10th); Kristy Ryan, Highland Riders (11th); Anna Presher, Prattsburgh Pioneers (12th); Megan Warriner, J-T Rough Riders (14th); Lexi Fairbrother, Little Rascals (15th); Becky Bidlack, Loon Lake Raiders (16th); and Kali Covert, Loon Lake Raiders (18th). The Steuben I Novice Team comprised of Jenna Brokaw, Courtney Lewis, and Jessica Pipe, Loon Lake Raiders; placed 3rd in the Team Contest. The Steuben III Novice Team comprised of Justin Calkins, J-T Rough Riders; Lauren Powell, Anna Presher, and Megan Warriner, placed 4th. The Steuben II Novice Team comprised of Emily Anger, Becky Bidlack and Kali Covert, Loon Lake Raiders placed 5th. The Monroe/Steuben Combo Novice Team with Kristy Ryan and Lexi Fairbrother placed 6th.

Placing in the Top 20 from Steuben County in the Junior Individual Contest were Shannon Peterson, Loon Lake Raiders (6th); Erica Freeman, Bath Trailblazers (7th); Hilary Mitchell, Loon Lake Raiders (10th); Nikki Von Hagn, Bath Trailblazers (11th); Morgan Ostrander, Bath Trailblazers (12th); Allyson Sick, Loon Lake Raiders (15th); Justine Burnett, Loon Lake Raiders (16th); and Meghan Applebee, Bath Trailblazers (20th). The Steuben 1 Junior Team Meghan Applebee, Erica Freeman, Hilary Mitchell and Morgan Ostrander placed 2nd in the Team Contest. The Steuben 2 Junior Team comprised of Justine Burnett, Shannon Peterson and Allyson Sick placed 3rd. The Steuben/Livingston Combo Junior Team with Tyler Calkins, J-T Rough Riders; Shandelle Pipe, Loon Lake Raiders; and Ashley Warriner, J-T Rough Riders, placed 8th. The Steuben/Yates Combo Junior Team with Allen Presher, Prattsburgh Pioneers; T.J. Von Hagn, Bath Trailblazers; and Nikki Von Hagn placed 9th.

Placing in the Top 20 from Steuben County in the Senior Individual Contest were Brittany Wheeler, Prattsburgh Pioneers (5th); Catherine Von Hagn, Highland Riders (6th); Annaliese Ross, Little Rascals (10th); Jenny Groen, Prattsburgh Pioneers (13th); and Michelle Harrison, Bath Trailblazers (17th). The Steuben 2 Senior Team comprised of Brittany Wheeler, Annaliese Ross, and Jesse Wallenburg, Prattsburgh Pioneers; placed 3rd in team competition. The Steuben 1 Senior Team comprised of Catherine Von Hagn, Jenny Groen, Michelle Harrison, and Rachael Ostrander, Bath Trailblazers, placed 4th. The Monroe/Steuben/Livingston Senior Combo Team with Marcy Myers, Loon Lake Raiders, placed 7th. The Steuben 3 Senior Team comprised of Hilary Lang, Little Rascals; Matt Applebee, Bath Trailblazers; and Elisha Myers, Loon Lake Raiders, placed 12th.

Individuals placing 1 – 16 from the Junior and Senior Division were invited to compete at the State Contest at State Fair. Individuals placing 17-20 are alternates. Steuben County 4-H Youth Participate in Region II Horse Communications Contest

The Annual Region II 4-H Horse Communications Contests were held April 2nd with twenty-three contestants from five counties participating. The contests were held at the Canandaigua Middle School.

4-H members from Cayuga, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, and Steuben counties participated.

The communications contests provide 4-H members with an opportunity to have their public presentations evaluated on a regional level plus vie for an opportunity to represent the area in the state contests. Serving as judges for the contests were Elle Border, Walworth; Gay Frame, Dansville; Mia Swartout-Egli, Penn Yan; Dean Heckman, Palmyra; Lynn Sick, Cohocton; and Donna Walker, Wayland.

In the Junior Teams (9-13 years old) Steuben County 4-H members Jenna Brokaw and Justine Burnett of the Loon Lake Raiders 4-H Club placed first. In the Senior Individual Presentations

Annaliese Ross and Hannah Smith were selected as alternates to represent Region II and Steuben County at the New York State Horse Communications Contest

Finger Lakes District Public
Presentation Contest

Nineteen Steuben County 4-H members participated in the Finger Lakes District Public Presentation Contest on April 2 at Canandaigua Middle School. There were 124 contestants from Cayuga, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne and Yates counties.

The Public Presentation Program provides 4-H members an opportunity to have their presentations evaluated on a district level. To succeed in life, one must be able to communicate effectively. Provided with opportunities to practice one’s speaking skills we learn how to make ourselves heard as well as defend our aspirations and beliefs. Throughout its history, 4-H Programs have provided opportunities for youth, particularly through its innovative public presentation program. Helping youth develop self-confidence, self-esteem and the lifelong skill of public speaking; as well as providing opportunities for youth to share their knowledge and skills with others, stimulates further learning. What better way to prepare youth for the future and the work world.

4-H members were evaluated on introduction, organization, poise, content and accuracy, delivery, effect on the audience, and summary. Serving as evaluators from Steuben County were Sue Schwingel, Atlanta, and David Quanz, Wayland. Serving as Room Hostess were: Adrianna Gricius, Springwater; Jeff Kurtz, Atlanta; and Jenna Kurtz, Atlanta.

All presenters received a ribbon and a certificate. Fashion Focus

Fashion Focus, a biannual program sponsored by the Finger Lakes 4-H Region, was held at the Canandaigua Middle School Saturday, March 12, 2005. This is a fun filled day of classes and workshops that are all related to clothing, textiles and personal or home fashions.

Several 4-H members, parents and leaders attended from Steuben County and brought home many new ideas for their club. Those attending were: Jenna Kurtz, Jessika McCombs, Joan Tichnor, Jennifer Ketchum, Michael Ketchum, Grace Brown, Harriett Hughes, Carmen Coppola, Amy Hughes, Mira Belanger, Kristina Belanger, Karen Flint Lauren Clark, Michelle Neu, Maria Lehman, Maria Kaniewski, Amelia Flint, Maureen Flint.

The leaders that taught classes were Grace Brown, and Karen Flint.

4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contests

The annual Finger Lakes District 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contests were held March 20 with twelve teams from four counties competing. The contests were held at the Marcus Whitman School in Rushville with the following counties participating: Livingston, Ontario, Steuben, and Wayne.

The dairy quiz bowl contests provide 4-H members an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the dairy industry and related subject matter in a fun setting. The contests, coordinated by Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H staff, are an educational experience for both the participants and spectators. Serving as moderators for the contests were James Patsos, Jr., Waterloo; Roberta Crill and John Wolf, Lyons.

The Ontario/Steuben Senior Team placed first, Steuben County’s Steuben I Senior Team placed third, and the Steuben II Senior Team placed fourth. In the senior individual competition, Sara Flint of the Dairy Dynamites 4-H Club placed 2nd, Jessica Ellison of the Dairy Dynamites 4-H Club placed 3rd, and Traci Lyons of the Dairy Dynamites placed 9th. Steuben County’s Steuben I Junior Team placed 2nd and the Steuben II Junior Team placed 5th. In the junior individual competition, Steven Quanz of the Southern Tier Livestock 4-H Club placed 1st, Samantha Sullivan of Dairy Dynamites placed 5th, and Emily Lyons of the Dairy Dynamites placed 9th. Steuben County’s Novice Team placed 1st and the Wayne/Steuben Novice Combo Team placed 2nd. In the novice individual competition, Josh Kramer of the Dairy Characters 4-H Club placed 1st, Kyle Warner, Dairy Dynamites, placed 3rd, Becky Seager, Prattsburgh Pioneers placed 4th, Byron Knoll of the Country Bunch 4-H Club placed 5th, and Jordan Kramer, Dairy Characters, placed 7th.

The top four senior and junior individuals with the fifth place individual as the alternate were selected to represent the Finger Lakes District at the State Contests on April 24 at Cornell University, Ithaca. Members selected from Steuben County include Sara Flint, Jessica Ellison, and Steven Quanz with Samantha Sullivan as alternate. Mike Bossard will be coaching the Finger Lakes District Junior Team.

Steuben County 4-H Members Participate in County Wide Public Presentation Day

Seventy-six Steuben County 4-H members recently participated in a county wide public presentation day. To succeed in life, one must be able to communicate effectively. Provided with opportunities to practice one’s speaking skills, we learn how to make ourselves heard as well as defend our aspirations and beliefs. Throughout its history, 4-H programs have provided these opportunities for youth, particularly through its innovative Public Presentation Program. Committed and enthusiastic about their involvement in this program, youth working alongside volunteer leaders and with help from parents, prepare for their chance to speak and be evaluated by volunteer judges. They come up with their own ideas on what to present, work out a plan making sure they have all of the parts of a presentation (introduction, body, summary). 4-H youth make public speaking look easy! Helping youth gain confidence, self-esteem, and speaking skills, as well as providing opportunities for youth to share their knowledge and skills with others, stimulates further learning. What better way to prepare youth for the future and the work world. The presentations were from three to fifteen minutes in length.

National Livestock Judging
Megan Loucks and Andrew Schubmehl were two of the four members of the New York State Livestock Judging Team that participated in the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest in Louisville, Kentucky.

Six Steuben County 4-H members were named to the New York State Teams to compete in national contests this fall Amy Quanz, Southern Tier Livestock; and Whitney Dennis, Dairy Characters have been named to the State 4-H Livestock Skillathon Team that will compete at in the National Livestock Skillathon contest November 15-17 in Louisville, Kentucky. Megan Loucks, and Andrew Schubmehl, Southern Tier Livestock; have been named to compete in the National Livestock Judging Contest to be held in Louisville, Kentucky from November 15-17. Jenny Groen, Prattsburgh Pioneers has been named to compete in the National Horse Judging Contest to be held in Louisville, Kentucky on November 6. Cathy Walker, Loon Lake Raiders, has been named to compete at the National Hippology Contest to compete in Louisville, Kentucky on November 6.

Amy has completed her seventh year in 4-H by being a member of both the Willing Workers 4-H Club and the Southern Tier Livestock 4-H Club. She has completed projects in swine, dairy, sewing, food and nutrition, public presentations, and community service. Amy, the daughter of Tom and Paula Quanz, is a ninth grade student at Wayland-Cohocton High School. She has been active in Dairy judging, Dairy quiz bowl, Livestock judging, Livestock skillathon and has exhibited her swine and clothing projects at the New York State Fair. In 2003 Amy demonstrated making ice cream at the district contest and the produced in NY Contest at the New York State Fair. She is a Steuben County Dairy Ambassador. Amy is also active with the Steuben Allegany Holstein Association, is in Drama club, plays soccer and is active in Church.

She has been active in Dairy judging competitions and quiz bowl, has exhibited her cattle at the New York State Fair and various other shows. Whitney was a participant of the State 4-H Dairy Judging Team that competed at the Pennsylvania All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg in 2002, and the National Dairy Quiz Bowl team in 2003.

Megan is the daughter of Phil and Cindy Loucks, and is a senior at Watkins Glen High School. She has been active in Skillathon, livestock judging, dairy quiz bowl and dairy judging competitions. Megan has exhibited beef and goats at the New York State Fair and at various other shows and competitions around New York. She attended the 2004 New York State Teen Ambassador Program. Megan is an active member of the Jr. Simmental Association and in her church.

Andrew has completed his ninth year in 4-H Club work as a member of both the Southern Tier Livestock 4-H Club and the Willing Workers. Andrew, son of John and Linda Schubmehl, is a junior at Wayland-Cohocton High School. He has completed numerous food and nutrition, sewing, swine, sheep, beef, public presentations, and community service projects. Andrew is active in livestock judging and livestock Skillathon. He has exhibited swine at the New York State Fair and was a participant int eh 2004 New York State Fair Clothing Revue Program. He is active in swimming, soccer, and band.

Jenny has completed her tenth year in the Prattsburgh Pioneers 4-H Club. Jenny is the daughter of John and Virginia Venator-Groen and is a senior at Prattsburgh Central School. She had completed extensive horse, dog, rabbit and poultry projects as well as vegetable and flower gardening, photography, home economics, public presentations and community service. Jenny is on the tennis team and is a member of marching band, concert band, yearbook staff, and student council. Jenny has exhibited flowers, vegetables, photography, dogs, horses, rabbits and poultry at the New York State Fair. Jenny has exhibited in many poultry, rabbit, and model horse shows in New York. She has been very active showing model horses and exhibits them all over the country including the Breyer Model Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse Park. Jenny received the Steuben County Outstanding 4-H Member Award in 2001 and the 2002 “I Dare You” Leadership Award. Jenny was a 2003 member of the National Poultry Avian Bowl Team.

Cathy has completed her ninth year in Loon Lake Raiders 4-H Club. Cathy, daughter of Mark and Sue Walker, is a senior at Wayland-Cohocton School. She has actively participated in public presentations, horse quiz bowl, hippology, and horse shows. Cathy was New York State Champion in Public presentations at the Junior Level and has competed at the New York State Quiz Bowl Event and the New York State Hippology Contest at both the Jr. and Sr. Levels. She has shown horses at County, Regional, and State Fair Competitions. Cathy was also the recipient of the 2003 “I Dare You” Leadership Award. She has held several officer positions in her club and has been a jr. leader at the Loon Lake Raiders summer day riding camps. In school, Cathy has been active in band, chorus, drama club, ICE competitions (creative writing), swimming and volleyball. She has also participated in Close-up and Girl’s State, and is a member of the present class for Steuben County Youth in Government. Cathy is planning to attend college to study molecular biology or biochemistry.

156 4-Hers, their leaders and parents gathered recently for the 4-H Dairy and Livestock Program, sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County. It was a time for all those businesses, organizations and individuals that support young agriculturists to make their presence known by providing awards for successful participants.
Kate Hargrave, who recently completed her eighth year as a member of the Southern Tier Livestock 4-H Club, was the recipient of the Farm Credit Award. The award goes to the member completing the best overall animal science project. Kate’s winning record was based on her Swine Breeding project.
Austin Koperczak received the Paul Emo Memorial Award. The Paul Emo Memorial Award is presented to a 4-H member who has been active in the 4-H dairy program. It is for a person who continues to display dedication and perseverance, demonstrates sportsmanship and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Austin has completed his fourth year as a member of the Outsiders 4-H Club.
Andrew Kurtz, received a registered Jersey heifer calf donated by Rainbow End Farm, Wayne King and Family of Avoca. Andrew has completed his eighth year as a member of the Cream of the Crop 4-H Club.

Sixty-eight members received awards for exhibiting Champion and Reserve Champion animals at the County Fair.
Greg Dickson received Genex/CRI Awards for exhibiting a beef animal, at the fair sired by Genex/CRI bulls. Additional Genex/CRI awards were presented to those exhibiting dairy cattle sired by the firm’s bulls: Bryan Coryea, Makenna Harris, Austin Koperczak, Jared Koperczak, Kyle Lowery, Emily Lyons, Traci Lyons, Heather McFall, Amy Quanz, Steven Quanz, Raymond Reed, Rhuben Reed, Rebecca Seager, Berry Tucker, Kyle Warner, Jim Wright and Jill Whiting.
Whitney Dennis, Dairy Characters 4-H Club, received a $100 savings bond for exhibiting the Best Bred and Owned Colored Breed Animal at the Steuben County Fair. Forty-five additional dairy awards were presented that evening.

Members of the Steuben County Dairy Judging teams were also rewarded. Awards also went to Livestock Judging Team members that participated at the New York State Fair. State Livestock Judging Team members Megan Loucks and Andrew Schubmehl received an award. The Skillathon Team received certificates for their participation. Megan Loucks, Andrew Schubmehl, Jeff Kurtz, Amy Quanz, Steven Quanz, Jeff Lyons, Sean Schubmehl, Denise Schubmehl, Jessika McCombs, and Raymond Thielges. State Skillathon Team Members Whitney Dennis and Amy Quanz received awards as did Kate Hargrave, John Schubmehl, and Jim Lyons who assisted with the Skillathon Teams.
Awards for the Keystone Stockman’s Contest were presented to Kate Hargrave, Amy Quanz, Sean Schubmehl, Whitney Dennis, Andrew Schubmehl, Jeff Kurtz, Jeff Lyons, and Megan Loucks.
Special appreciation was extended in behalf of the 4-Hers to all of the award sponsors, as well as to the leaders and parents who give many hours to the 4-H dairy and livestock programs.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County’s 4-H Horse Program held its annual awards banquet on November 12, 2004, at Haverling High School, Bath. Approximately 150 members, leaders, and parents attended the dinner.

The awards were as follows:
Thirty-four members received recognition for completing one or more levels of the Clover Program. The Clover Program was developed by the Steuben County 4-H Horse Leaders to provide a standard curriculum and activity guide. Members move through the program at their own pace and are competency tested at each level.

First Year Project Record Awards were given to Meghan Applebee, Erica Freeman and Thomas Von Hagn, Bath Trailblazers; Becky Bidlack, Kali Covert, and Elizabeth Stewart, Loon Lake Raiders; Courtney Cornell, J-T Rough Riders; Allen Presher, Prattsburgh Pioneers; Kaylee Parulski and Hayley Scharbach, Steuben Star Gazers. Jesse Wallenburg of the Prattsburgh Pioneers received the Farm Credit Record Award for completing the best 4-H horse record.

Thirty-two members received awards for completing project records that were rated superior or excellent. Awards were given to fifteen horse show helpers in appreciation of their efforts. Twenty-one awards were presented to members who participated in Regional and State Hippology. Cathy Walker, Loon Lake Raiders, was recognized for her participation in National Hippology. Four members received awards for County and State Horse Communications.

Forty-one awards were presented for participating in County, Regional and State Horse Quiz Bowl.

Three members were recognized for participating in State Horse Judging. Jenny Groen, Prattsburgh Pioneers, was recognized for her participation in National Horse Judging. Engraved glass picture frames were awarded to the twelve 4-H’ers who participated in the 4-H Horse Show at New York State Fair.

Kristen Schehr, Hammondsport, sponsored the winner of the Saddle Log Award. Tara Silsbee, Bath Trailblazers, was the winner riding 221 hours from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Tyler Calkins, J-T Rough Riders; and Becky Travis, Loon Lake Raiders, logged over 150 hours.

Members logging over 100 hours were Becky Bidlack and Justine Burnett, Loon Lake Raiders; Jenny Groen, Prattsburgh Pioneers; and Hannah Smith and Catherine Von Hagn, Bath Trailblazers.

Members logging over 75 hours were Sheri Bidlack, Jenna Brokaw and Shannon Peterson, Loon Lake Raiders; and Brittany Geffers, Bath Trailblazers.

Honorable mention saddle log awards were given to Meaghann Anger, Kali Covert, Kyle Covert, Elisha Myers and Marcy Myers, Loon Lake Raiders; and Allen Presher, Prattsburgh Pioneers.

Each year the Sunny Award is given to a horse that has been ridden by several 4-H members as a good beginner horse. This year’s recipient was Blondy Salty Rose ridden by Tyler Calkins. The Spunky Anniversary Running With Spirit Memorial Award is given to the horse that has a true love of gaming competition. This year’s recipient was Ima Hot Cowboy ridden by Tara Silsbee.

2004 4-H Achivement and Leader Recognition

October 8th marked the celebration of the many accomplishments of the 4-H members and leaders in Steuben County at the annual Achievement Program. This year’s program was held at the Haverling High School in Bath, and featured a chicken barbeque and dish-to-pass dinner before the awards portion of the program. Our emcees for the evening were Amy Quanz and Andrew Schubmehl both member of the Southern Tier Livestock and Willing Workers 4-H Club; Whitney Hull a member of Willing Workers 4-H Club; and Megan Loucks a member of the Southern Tier Livestock 4-H Club; a member of the Country Bunch 4-H Club, Austin Harvey, led the pledge to the American flag. A sincere “thank you” to these 4-H members who assisted with the program.

Special awards were presented in the following categories. Outstanding 4-H members were, Jill Whiting and Traci Lyons, both members of the Dairy Dynamites 4-H Club, and Brandi Dockstader, Howard Hillbillies 4-H Club. Jill, daughter of Dan and Candy Whiting, Corning, completed her 10th year in 4-H. Jill is a junior at Corning Painted Post West High. The “I Dare You” Leadership Award recognizes those who, with a little encouragement, are ready to see themselves as leaders. Jeff Lyons, the son of Jim and Jan Lyons, Campbell, completed his 10th year in 4-H. Jeff is a freshman at Campbell/Savona High School.
