Area 4-H'ers Return Home
from the State Capitol

Denise Schubmehl and Kristine Gessner, both from Wayland and members of the Southern Tier Livestock 4-H Club recently returned from the state capital for the 77th Annual New York State 4-H Capital Days Program for a trip of their lifetime. The program included two intensive days of tours and lectures. 108 participants representing 35 counties across New York State learned about state and local government during the 2012 Capital Days Program.

Participants met with leaders in state government, members of the court system and officials from a variety of state agencies. Assemblyman Stephen Hawley discussed the legislative process with the 4-H members. They observed a working session of the Senate. The NYS 4-H Youth Development Program was even recognized on the Senate floor for being a great youth development organization. Assemblyman Peter Lopez discussed Civic Engagement. During the legislative breakfast Schubmehl and Gessner met with Assemblyman Philip Palmesano who was pleased to see 4-Hers from his area of the state. Hope Engel, Public Information Officer, informed participants about the NY State Court of Appeals.

The participants learned about speaking to their legislators, the reporting of politics, and career opportunities in government as they tour state agencies, participate in discussion sessions, and visit with Legislators. Denise and Kristine’s agency tour was the NYS Agriculture and Markets. Participants also toured the Capitol and visited the Corning Tower and State Museum. Participants learned how a bill becomes a law.

The New York State Association of Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Educators sponsor the 4-H Capital Days Program.

Denise Schubmehl and Kristine Gessner's View of the Trip:

On our trip to Albany we learned a lot more about the government system as a whole. We especially got more information on how a bill becomes a law. As we toured the Capitol Building we learned that one of the staircases, otherwise known as the million dollar stair case had cost over one million and a half dollars. They had paid around thirteen Italian sculptures to come sculpt faces and flowers and designs into the staircases. They paid each sculptor five dollars a day. On our second day there we also got to sit in one of the Senate sessions. This session was very informative and we got to learn how government works in reality.  Also on our last day there we went to the Ag. and Market Department in Albany. We got to get great information about local and state wide farms. In the last ten years the number of farms have remained relatively the same being at around 34,000, 35,000 and 36,000. We also were always encouraged to tell people our 4-H stories and to go out and be the difference we wish to see in the world. Whether you’re forty or fourteen you’re never too young to try to make a difference. We also were encouraged to follow our dreams and that no goal was too big to achieve. Overall the Capital Days Trip in Albany was a well worth it trip. We would encourage anyone who gets picked to go on the trip to attend as it definitely helped give a better understanding of our government.

Eight youth from across New York State have been selected as the 2011 4-H Opportunity Scholarship recipients. Seven 4-H’ers will receive $1,000 scholarships and one 4-H’er will receive a $3,000 scholarship. Congratulations to the recipients and to all the outstanding 4-H members who applied this year.

Katherine DeWitt, Ulster County
Erica Freeman, Steuben County
Miranda Hughes, Saratoga County
Andrew Kittleson, Wayne County
Kathryn Lawson, Ontario County
Courtney Luckman, Niagara County
Rebecca Smith, Oswego County
Elizabeth Spoth, Erie County

Erica is an 8-year 4-H member from Steuben County. Throughout 4-H, Erica has focused much of her time in the areas of equestrian arts and fine arts and crafts. While riding horses has always been a hobby for Erica, she has honed her skills as a competitor through 4-H Quizbowl matches and horse shows. As the Quizbowl Team Captain, she led her team to participate in the Eastern National competition in Kentucky. She also led her Hippology team as top senior individual at both regional and state levels. Erica’s art awards at both the Steuben County Fair, and the New York State Fair, include high premiums and best of show. Complementing her 4-H experiences, Erica is the President of her high school Debate Club and Secretary of her school’s National Honor Society.
