Cooking Matters for Adults
Cooking Matters for Families

Host agencies and volunteers needed!

Early in 2012 Eat Smart New York is offering two new series of classes called Cooking Matters For Adults for parents and Cooking Matters for Families which is a team of a child 8+ and a parent/caretaker who will cook together.

In order to have either series of classes, there needs to be collaborative efforts with community partners. We are looking for host agencies to recruit participants and/or provide a space to hold the classes. Also needed are a volunteer chef, and a volunteer classroom assistant to help with each class. A nutrition educator from the ESNY program will coordinate and facilitate the class. In each of the series of six classes, food preparation and cooking skills are practiced along with interactive nutrition activities. After the meal is prepared, all the participants eat together. And as an added bonus, each family takes home the ingredients to make the main dish for their family.

The Cooking Matters classes are sponsored by Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit that is working to end childhood hunger in America by connecting children with the nutritious food they need to lead healthy, active lives. Cooking Matters has received special recognition from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for excellence in nutrition education.

Eat Smart New York will offer classes in different areas of Steuben County so volunteers are needed from all areas to keep travel time a minimum. If you are an agency in Steuben County that is working with families, a chef who wants to get involved in the community or someone who would like to be a volunteer helper and have fun at the same time, please contact Loree Symonds, Nutrition Community Educator/team leader at Cornell Cooperative Extension.
